Three days later, Nonye called again.
This time, I answered because I wanted to hear what she would say.
“Ella, have you thought about what I told you?”
I was sitting at my desk, looking at the bank statements.
“Which part?”
“The part about leaving Kelly.”
I laughed without humor.
“Why are you so interested in my marriage?”
“Because I am carrying his child.”
“And that makes you his wife?”
“It makes me the mother of his child.”
I paused.
“Nonye, let me ask you something. Has Kelly told you that he has been moving money out of our joint savings account?”
Silence.
It lasted only a few seconds, but I noticed it.
“Why are you asking me that?”
“Because I want to know whether you are aware of what he is doing.”
“I don’t know anything about your money.”
“Then perhaps you should ask him where he has been sending it.”
