Whenever I asked where they were going, they both gave me the same answer.
“We just have a few things to take care of.”
At first, I wasn’t worried.

But one afternoon, I noticed that Emily locked herself in her bedroom and cried after returning home.
When I asked what had happened, she said something that made me uneasy.
“Mom, please don’t ask Dad anything.”
Those words troubled me.
Another time, I accidentally overheard them talking in the garage.
“Dad, I don’t want to keep doing this anymore,” Emily said.
“You promised,” Robert replied. “If we stop now, everything we’ve done will be for nothing.”
“But Mom is going to find out someday.”
“Not if you keep our agreement.”
When I entered the garage, they both fell silent Robert forced a smile.
“We were just talking about the car.”
But Emily wasn’t smiling.
After that, my husband began spending even more time away from home. Sometimes he wouldn’t return until eleven at night.
