We Decided to Adopt Our 85-Year-Old Neighbor After His Wife Passed Away – Before Answering, He Said, ‘I Need to Confess Something’

That was the sentence I had been waiting for.

Not an excuse.

Not a defense.

Just the truth.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I know.”

I nodded.

“You should have.”

We told the children the following afternoon.

My husband explained it as simply as possible.

“Walter isn’t only your grandpa because you love him.”

My youngest looked confused.

“Then why?”

My husband smiled.

“Because he’s actually your mother’s grandfather.”

The children stared at Walter.

My eight-year-old’s eyes widened.

“So you’re really Grandpa?”

Walter sighed.

“I suppose I am.”

The boy grinned.

“I knew it!”

Everyone laughed.

Walter wiped his eyes.

“You knew?”

“Because you always know where Mom hides the cookies.”

Walter looked offended.

“That is classified information.”

The children exploded with laughter.

And somehow, that ordinary moment healed something.

Not everything.

But something.

A month later, I found the adoption papers again.

They were still sitting in the same folder.

The papers we had prepared when we thought Walter was simply an elderly neighbor who had become family.

I took them next door.

Walter was sitting at the kitchen table.

He looked at the folder.

Then at me.

“I don’t know whether we need these anymore,” he said.

I smiled.
