And that small kindness meant more than either woman could have known.
Three Days Before the Wedding
I didn’t return home with Daniel.
I asked Robert to arrange a taxi, and I went straight to my apartment.
For hours, I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the wedding dress hanging in the corner.
The ivory fabric caught the afternoon sunlight.
Three days earlier, I had imagined myself walking down the aisle with Daniel waiting at the end.
Now I couldn’t imagine standing beside him without remembering the fear in that car.
He called repeatedly.
I didn’t answer.
Eventually, he sent a message.
I know I hurt you. I have no excuse. I will give you whatever time you need. I am sorry.
I read it several times.
I wanted to believe him.
But love had always seemed simple when I thought about it before that day. I had believed that loving someone meant trusting them, and trusting them meant knowing they would never deliberately put you in danger.
