“You didn’t think about it because you decided my feelings were less important than your plan.”
He had no answer.
I continued, “You could have told me the truth. You could have let me decide whether to come. You could have brought my mother with you and explained everything.”
“I know.”
“No, Daniel. You know now. But you didn’t know it when you put your hands on me and stopped me from leaving.”
He lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.”
I looked at Margaret.
“And you. You were so afraid I would stop loving you that you helped arrange a meeting that began with a lie.”
Her tears fell freely.
“I am sorry, Emily.”
“I believe that you’re sorry. But I’m still hurt.”
She nodded.
“I understand.”
I wished I could forgive everyone immediately.
I wished I could return to the life I had imagined just a few days earlier.
But the truth had changed the shape of everything, and pretending otherwise would only create another lie.
