“When?”
She opened her mouth, but no answer came.
“When were you planning to tell me that the woman who gave birth to me was alive? Before the wedding? After? When I had children of my own?”
Margaret lowered her head.
“I don’t know.”
That answer hurt more than an excuse would have.
“Why did you keep it from me?”
She took a shaky breath.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Of losing you.”
I stared at her.
“Losing me to whom?”
“To the truth,” she whispered. “To the questions. To the possibility that you would look at me differently and wonder whether anything between us had been real.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Mom, you were my mother before I walked into this room. You raised me. You stayed awake when I was sick. You held me when my first relationship ended. You helped me choose my wedding dress.”
