They smiled for the family portrait that afternoon… but one person in the picture knew the family was about to be destroyed.

PAGE 9 — THE PHOTOGRAPH

The police arrested Eleanor.

Thomas confessed to the theft.

Edward survived.

But the Whitmore family would never be the same.

Months later, the mansion was sold.

The money was divided according to Edward’s new will.

Ruth received the property that had once belonged to her ancestors.

She didn’t keep the mansion.

Instead, she turned it into a school.

Children from the surrounding communities could attend without paying tuition.

Years passed.

The story became almost forgotten.

Then, in 1996, an old trunk was discovered in the attic.

Inside was the family photograph.

The same photograph taken on that September afternoon.

A newspaper reporter studying the picture noticed something strange.

Ruth was holding a brass key.

But there was another detail.

Behind her, barely visible through the window of the mansion, was Edward.

He wasn’t standing outside with the family.

He was looking directly toward Ruth.

And beside him stood Eleanor.

The photograph had captured something nobody had noticed.

Eleanor wasn’t smiling.

She was staring at the key.

The reporter enlarged the photograph.

Then he noticed something else.

Ruth wasn’t actually holding one key.

She was holding two.

One was visible between her fingers.

The second was hidden in her palm.
