The Secret Inside
I kept the suitcase underneath my bed for almost three weeks.
I didn’t open it.
Part of me was afraid.
My mother had always been mysterious about certain parts of her life.
Whenever I asked about her childhood, she would smile and say:
“Some memories are better kept in their boxes.”
I had always assumed she meant photographs.
Maybe she meant this.
One Saturday morning, I finally pulled the suitcase out.
The lock was stiff.
After several minutes, it finally opened.
Inside were old clothes.
A knitted scarf.
Two yellowed photographs.
A small wooden jewelry box.
And underneath everything…
a stack of envelopes tied together with blue ribbon.
My heart started beating faster.
The envelopes had names written on them.
My name.
Robert’s name.
Melissa’s name.
I picked up mine.
It wasn’t a letter.
It was a copy of an old document.
I read it once.
Then again.
Then I sat down on the floor.
My mother had been keeping something from all of us.
Something involving the house.
Something that had happened years before Robert married her.
I continued reading.
Then I found another document.
And another.
Suddenly, the suitcase didn’t look old anymore.
It looked like a locked room.
And I had just found the key.
But there was one problem.
The documents didn’t explain everything.
They only raised one question.
Why had my mother deliberately left the suitcase to me?
