How could we have missed an entire baby?
Before I could ask another question, a nurse rushed into the room.
“Doctor, we need you in the neonatal unit.”
He hurried away.
Mamdouh remained beside me, holding my hand while I struggled to understand what was happening.
A few minutes later, he returned from the corridor looking pale.
“Camelia,” he whispered, “they’re checking the scans again.”
“Why?”
“Because they think there may be another discrepancy.”
I stared at him.
“Another baby?”
He didn’t answer.
Then Dr. Hisham entered with another specialist.
They explained that a review of my earlier ultrasound images had revealed several areas that had not been interpreted correctly. Some structures overlapped, and the original scans did not provide a reliable picture of the entire pregnancy.
They needed to review everything before making a definitive statement.
I was frightened, but I kept asking the same question.
“Are my children alive?”
