“How long has he been experiencing these symptoms?” a doctor asked.
“Approximately twenty minutes of chest pressure,” the nurse answered quickly. “His breathing and responses changed, and the monitor began showing concerning readings.”
The doctor nodded and continued the assessment.
The patient tried to speak, but his voice was weak.
“Am I having a heart attack?”
“We’re going to find out what’s happening,” the doctor told him. “Right now, we need you to stay still while we help you.”
The medical team worked rapidly to assess and stabilize him. Further testing was ordered to determine the cause of the sudden deterioration.
His heart rhythm was found to be dangerously abnormal.
The doctors explained that some heart-rhythm problems can develop with surprisingly subtle symptoms. A person may initially be able to speak, walk, and carry on an ordinary conversation even while a potentially serious problem is developing.
That was what had made this situation so concerning.
