“What happened?”
Nobody answered.
Luía was in the kitchen.
She wasn’t feeding them.
She hadn’t forced them.
She had simply prepared food and left it there.
Mariana picked up her fork.
“She cooks differently.”
Ricardo frowned.
“Who?”
“Luía.”
The twins nodded.
“She doesn’t scream.”
Ricardo stared at his daughters.
Something had changed.
He couldn’t explain it.
But for the first time in a very long time, dinner was quiet.
Not happy.
Not yet.
But peaceful.
Then little Isabela dropped her spoon.
She stared at the floor.
Her lower lip trembled.
And suddenly she whispered a word.
Everyone froze.
It was the first clear word she had spoken in weeks.
“Mommy.”
Ricardo’s heart stopped.

Ricardo didn’t breathe.
Nobody moved.
Isabela stared at the spoon on the floor.
Then she looked toward the kitchen.
“Mommy.”
Ricardo’s eyes filled with tears.
He had heard his daughter’s voice countless times before.
