I stopped wearing pánts to bed at night the day my husband’s father visited my house,

Idris politely declined.

“I won’t take much of your time. Your father asked me to bring some documents and explain a few things in person.”

He placed the black briefcase on the dining table.

Suleiman sat down slowly.

For several seconds, he looked at his son and daughter-in-law without speaking.

Then he asked Malik a question that made Amina’s stomach tighten.

“If you knew I had no money, no business, and nothing left to give you, would you still have brought me into your home?”

Malik answered immediately.

“Yes, Father.”

“What if I never recovered? What if you had to care for me for the rest of your life?”

“I would still have brought you home.”

Suleiman turned toward Amina.

“And you, my daughter?”

Amina opened her mouth, but no words came out.

She remembered the accusations, the searches through his belongings, and the times she had made him feel like an unwanted guest.
