“Not yet. I need a little more time.”
Whenever Amina entered the room, he ended the call.
One evening, she overheard him whispering from the balcony.
“Has the transfer been completed?”
A pause followed.
“Good. Keep the documents safe. Nobody must know until I am ready.”
Amina froze behind the curtain.
The next morning, she told Malik what she had heard.
“I think your father is hiding money from us.”
Malik shook his head.
“What money? You know what happened to his businesses.”
“Then explain the phone calls. Explain the missing cash. Explain why he keeps searching through old receipts.”
“I don’t know.”
“Exactly! You don’t know anything because you refuse to ask him the right questions.”
Malik rubbed his face.
“I am not going to interrogate my father because you suspect him of something.”
Amina’s eyes filled with angry tears.
“And I am tired of being the only person in this house who is allowed to worry about our future!”
