THE VIDEO
The boardroom was filled when I arrived.
Mrs. Bellamy’s son appeared on a large screen from overseas.
Vivian sat beside a private investigator.
Several attorneys were present.
And then I saw Carla.
She looked pale.
She wouldn’t look at me.
I took the only empty chair.
The lawyer stood.
“Before we discuss the estate, Mrs. Bellamy requested that we watch this recording.”
He turned on the screen.
Mrs. Bellamy appeared in her hospital bed.
And there it was.
The diamond ring.
On her hand.
The same ring everyone believed I had stolen.
Mrs. Bellamy looked into the camera.
“If this recording is being played, I am dead…”
She paused.
“…which means my children are finally punctual.”
Nobody laughed.
She continued.
“For thirty years, my daughter Vivian has believed I intended to leave my department-store shares to her brother.”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“My son has believed the opposite.”
Mrs. Bellamy smiled.
“Both of them have spent more energy circling my estate than entering my hospital room.”
Vivian stood.
“This is ridiculous.”
The lawyer motioned for her to sit.
Onscreen, Mrs. Bellamy continued.
“I have therefore sold my controlling shares.”
The room went silent.
“The proceeds have been placed into a charitable trust for cardiac nursing education.”
Vivian’s face turned white.
Her brother stared at the screen.
Then Mrs. Bellamy said:
“The first scholarship shall be named for Ms. Maya Santos.”
My heart stopped.
She continued:
“The nurse who sat with me when I was frightened and told me the truth when my family would not.”
I couldn’t breathe.
Then she smiled.
And said the words I never expected to hear.
“Regarding my ring…”
Everyone looked at me.
“I gave it to Maya.”
My voice came out as a whisper.
“That isn’t true.”
The lawyer looked at me.
But the recording continued.
“Maya does not know this.”
Mrs. Bellamy’s smile became almost mischievous.
“She would have refused.”
Then she said:
“I instructed Nurse Carla Jensen to place the ring in Maya’s lunch bag after my death.”
Carla began crying.
Vivian turned toward her.
“You did this?”
Carla covered her face.
The lawyer paused the recording.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vivian screamed:
“WHY?”
Carla finally looked up.
And what she said next made the entire room go silent.
