I had heard Saoirse’s name a hundred times. Usually, it came with a sigh from Grayson or a disapproving look from Lorna.
Saoirse was difficult.
Saoirse was obsessed with money.
Saoirse had never accepted her father’s death.
Saoirse wanted to make everyone miserable.
I had never met her properly. By the time I joined the family, she had already been excluded from most gatherings, and Grayson always had an explanation for her absence.
Now I wondered what she knew.
“What if she talks to Maris?” Grayson asked.
“She won’t get the chance. You made sure of that yourself.”
I remembered the engagement party, the family dinners, the wedding preparations. I remembered how often Saoirse’s name had been quietly removed from conversations.
Lorna continued.
“Besides, your wife thinks her father is some ordinary engineer. She has no idea what her family is capable of, and she certainly doesn’t understand how money works.”
