I thought I was preventing a misunderstanding.
What I was actually doing was giving the people she feared an opportunity to silence her.
Saoirse had already spent years being told that her questions made her difficult. When I repeated her warning to Grayson, I helped him prove to the family that she couldn’t be trusted.
I didn’t mean to hurt her.
But good intentions do not erase consequences.
That is the lesson I wish I had understood before the wedding.
When someone tells you something troubling about the people you are preparing to trust with your life, don’t rush to accuse anyone.
But don’t rush to defend them, either.
Don’t carry the warning straight back to the people it concerns.
Take a breath.
Ask yourself what you know, what you don’t know, and what you can independently verify.
Get your own advice.
Keep your own records.
And remember that a person who is trying to protect you may not get a second chance to do it.
