THE BRIDE WHO HID UNDER THE BED AND DISCOVERED HER HUSBAND’S DARKEST SECRET

***

Fourteen months after the wedding, I received a letter from Grayson.

It was two pages long.

He wrote about the good times we had shared. He described the pressure he had been under after his father’s death. He said his mother had influenced him. He claimed that the apartment arrangements had been misunderstood.

He used the word *overreacted* twice.

He did not apologize for saying he had chosen me because I was easy to manage.

He did not apologize for planning the end of our marriage before it began.

He did not mention the way he had spoken about his sister.

At the bottom, he wrote that he hoped one day I would remember him as the man who had loved me, not the man who had hurt me.

I folded the letter and placed it in a drawer.

I didn’t respond.

Lorna never contacted me directly again. I heard that she told several people I had invaded her privacy by recording a private conversation.
