When he was finally ready to leave, Judge Bennett called him back.
“Young man.”
Adam turned.
“Yes, Your Honor?”
“What’s your full name?”
“Adam Miller, sir.”
“Adam, I want you to remember this day.”
“I will, Your Honor.”
“Not because you stole bread.”
The judge leaned forward.
“Remember it because this was the day you learned that one mistake does not have to define your entire life.”
Adam nodded.
The judge’s voice grew gentler.
“You are going to face difficult moments again. Everyone does. But when that happens, remember that the right choice is not always the easiest one. Ask for help before desperation pushes you toward another mistake.”
“I will, sir.”
“And one more thing.”
“Yes?”
“If life is ever kind enough to place you in a position where you can help someone else, don’t forget what happened here.”
Adam looked at the elderly judge.
“I won’t.”
At fifteen, he could not fully understand the importance of that promise.
