“Then that’s exactly what it means.”
He helped her fasten the clasp only after she nodded.
Later, when the guests had left and the sun began setting behind the buildings, Elena found Matthew waiting on the terrace.
“There’s something I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time,” he said.
She leaned against the railing.
“Should I be worried?”
“Probably not.”
“That sounds reassuring.”
He laughed softly, then became serious.
“When you climbed into my car that night, you were frightened, injured, and desperate to escape. I helped because you needed help. Nothing about that moment meant you owed me anything.”
“I know.”
“I want you to know that whatever happens between us must be a choice you make freely. If you want me in your life, I’ll be there. If you don’t, I’ll respect that too.”
