One afternoon, Elena received a call from her lawyer.
“The court has approved an order preserving the assets in your father’s trust while the case proceeds,” he told her. “We also have sufficient evidence to challenge several of the transfers.”
Elena sat down.
“Does that mean I can get the properties back?”
“It means we have a strong basis to pursue their recovery. There are still legal steps ahead, but this is an important development.”
After the call, Elena walked outside and sat on a bench beneath a tree.
She should have felt triumphant.
Instead, she felt exhausted.
She had spent so many years trying to earn the love of someone who had benefited from making her feel worthless.
Now that the truth was emerging, she had to learn who she was without that burden.
Matthew found her there later that afternoon.
“You look as though you have received good news and bad news at the same time,” he said.
