The 24-year-old woman had been forced by her stepmother into a bedroom with one of her business partners. Terrified, she escaped and climbed into a stranger’s car… never knowing that one desperate choice would change her life forever.

“Because something is missing from Vargas International’s records. Your stepmother may believe you know where it is.”

Elena studied the documents on the screen.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Gabriel Vargas.

Her father.

Beside it were references to a private trust established years before his death.

“I’ve never heard of this trust.”

“Your father created it shortly before he died. It appears to have held a controlling interest in several properties and shares in his company.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“Isabel told me my father died with almost nothing.”

“According to these records, he left behind substantial assets.”

“Then where did they go?”

“That is what we’re trying to establish.”

Matthew opened another file.

The trust’s assets had gradually been transferred into companies connected to Isabel. Several of the transactions carried signatures attributed to Elena.

But she had never signed them.

Her fingers tightened around the cup.

“These aren’t my signatures.”
