He listened, then smiled slightly.
“Perfect. See you Sunday.”
He hung up.
I looked at him in disbelief.
“You actually did it.”
“I did.”
“Did you tell him why you were inviting him?”
“No.”
“Daniel!”
“What? Should I have told him he was coming to a surprise trial?”
“This isn’t funny.”
“I know it isn’t.”
His expression became serious.
“I promise you, I’m not going to humiliate him. But I’m not going to pretend what he did was acceptable either.”
When we told Emma, she looked as though we had announced that we were moving to another country.
“Why is Tyler coming here?”
“Your father invited him for dinner,” I said.
“I heard that part.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Did you tell him I cried?”
“No.”
“Are you going to yell at him?”
“No.”
“Then what’s the point?”
Daniel pulled out a chair and sat across from her.
“Tyler is someone you’ve brought into your life. I’d like to get to know him better.”
