His face hardened.
“I’m your husband! It’s your responsibility to take care of me!”
I met his gaze.
“You just told me to use my own money to support myself. That’s exactly what I’m doing. You and your mother can manage your expenses yourselves.”
Derek grabbed his phone.
“Fine. I’ll order dinner.”
He selected nearly two hundred dollars’ worth of food.
Then he tried paying with one of the supplementary cards.
The transaction was declined.
He tried again.
Declined.
His face reddened.
“Lauren! What did you do to my card? Unblock it right now!”
I sat down again.
“It’s not your card, Derek. It belongs to me.”
For a moment, he couldn’t speak.
Then Patricia appeared.
“What on earth is all this shouting about?”
Derek turned toward her.
“Mom, I need money to order dinner!”
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
“Well, sweetheart, there’s actually something I meant to tell you. I recently paid a $6,500 deposit for a diamond necklace. It was a special opportunity, and I couldn’t let it slip away.”
