Derek looked offended.
“You’re making it sound like I haven’t done anything.”
I shook my head.
“I’m showing you what we’ve actually spent.”
He pointed toward the computer.
“That’s your income. Of course you can afford it.”
I stared at him.
“And your income belongs to your mother now.”
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Then turned toward Patricia.
“Mom, we need to talk about the money.”
She looked hurt.
“Why are you suddenly speaking to me like that?”
“Because you spent six thousand five hundred dollars!”
“It was a deposit!”
“On jewelry!”
She stood.
“I have spent my entire life taking care of you!”
I watched the familiar performance begin.
Patricia was very good at turning questions into accusations.
If Derek questioned her choices, she’d remind him of childhood sacrifices.
If I questioned her behavior, she’d accuse me of trying to separate them.
But tonight, Derek needed access to his salary.
