SIX MONTHS PREGNANT , I WAS HIRED TO SING AT MY EX’S WEDDING—THEN THE GROOM REALIZED THE SONG WAS ABOUT THE LIFE HE TRIED TO ERASE –

For the first time that night, Sophia laughed.

Three months later, Sophia gave birth to two healthy boys.

She named them Noah and Miles.

Maxwell was at the hospital.

But he didn’t demand anything.

He waited.

When Sophia allowed him into the room, he stood beside the crib and cried.

“I don’t know how to do this,” he whispered.

Sophia looked at him.

“Then learn.”

He nodded.

And he did.

Not with grand gestures.

Not with expensive gifts.

Not with promises.

He showed up.

He came to appointments.

He learned how to change diapers.

He stayed awake through long nights.

He paid every medical bill he had once hidden from her.

Most importantly, he stopped asking Sophia to forgive him.

He simply became someone worthy of forgiveness.

A year later, Sophia stood on a stage again.

This time, she wasn’t singing at Maxwell’s wedding.

She was performing at the opening of her own small music studio in Harlem.

A sign above the door read:

WILLIAMS MUSIC HOUSE.

Sophia had used part of the wedding money to keep herself afloat.

She had used the rest to invest in herself.

The studio was small.

The walls were painted warm cream.

There was an old piano near the window.
