“Mom, is everything ready for tonight?” she asked.
“Almost everything.”
“Are you nervous?”
“A little.”
She laughed.
“Don’t be. Dad has been telling everyone how lucky he is to have you. He even told my husband that you were the best decision he ever made.”
I closed my eyes.
There was no reason to punish Emily for something she didn’t know.
“That’s sweet of him,” I said.
Then I asked her a question.
“Sweetheart, do you know if Sofia is coming tonight?”
“Of course. I invited her weeks ago. Why?”
“No reason. I just wanted to make sure.”
Emily paused.
“Mom, is everything okay?”
I nearly told her everything.
The words were there, ready to come out.
But I knew that if I told her over the phone, she might confront Sofia before I had decided what to do. The entire evening could collapse into confusion, accusations, and arguments before the truth was properly established.
