“Okay, guys,” she announced to the screen, “I need your help. Which one should I get? The floral one or the vanilla one?”
She turned the bottles toward her camera, then tilted her head to make sure her hair appeared in the shot.
Several seconds passed.
The cashier smiled politely.
“Ma’am, would you like me to ring these up?”
“One second,” Brittany replied without looking at her. “My followers are deciding.”
I glanced at the long line behind me.
At seventy-three, I had discovered that the phrase one second could mean almost anything. Sometimes it meant one second. Sometimes it meant enough time to grow another generation of grandchildren.
In Brittany’s case, it seemed to mean the entire afternoon.
“Oh, they’re both gorgeous!” she exclaimed, reading comments from her screen. “Maybe I’ll just buy both. You only live once, right?”
The cashier finally began scanning the items.
When she announced the total, Brittany blinked for a moment.
