“He didn’t choose you because you were his wife,” Arthur continued.
“He chose you because of who you were before you became his wife.”
My eyes filled.
“The woman who sat beside people nobody else visited.”
I looked down at the deed.
Julian had not been searching for someone to inherit his money.
He had been searching for someone who understood what his life had meant.
Chapter 12 — The Masterpiece
Three weeks later, Caleb and I stood inside Julian’s old tailor shop.
Dust covered the windows.
Old sewing machines sat beneath white sheets.
Rolls of fabric filled the shelves.
And on one wall hung photographs of children.
Hundreds of them.
I looked closer.
They weren’t wealthy children.
They were children from shelters.
Children from struggling families.
Children who had needed school clothes, winter coats, dresses, suits, and uniforms.
Julian had made them.
For free.
For decades.
Caleb stood beside me.
“I didn’t know he did this.”
Neither did I.
Then we found a box.
Inside were receipts.
Donation records.
Letters from parents.
Thank-you cards written in children’s handwriting.
One little card said:
Thank you, Mr. Julian. I wore my blue dress to school and everyone said I looked pretty.
Another said:
