After graduating from Wasilla High School, Palin attended several colleges before earning a degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. Before entering politics, she worked briefly in sports broadcasting and participated in beauty pageants, finishing as a runner-up in the Miss Alaska competition in 1984.
Palin began her political career in 1992, when she won a seat on the Wasilla City Council. Four years later, she became the city’s mayor, serving until 2002.
During her time in local government, she developed a reputation for challenging established political figures and questioning existing practices. She later served on Alaska’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, where she raised concerns about ethics within the state’s political establishment.
These early experiences helped establish the image that would later define her national career: an outsider willing to challenge the political establishment.
Becoming Governor of Alaska
In 2006, Palin ran for governor of Alaska as a Republican. She defeated the incumbent governor in the party’s primary and went on to win the general election.
