“Please don’t drink that.”
I still remember those words because they came just inches before I took a sip that could have ended my life.
It was an ordinary morning in my office on the forty-second floor of Harrison Tower in Seattle. My coffee was exactly the way I liked it—fresh French roast with a touch of cinnamon, prepared for me in the executive lounge.
I had the porcelain cup in my hand and was already bringing it toward my lips when I heard that soft, frightened voice.
I stopped.
Standing just inside my glass office doors was a boy who couldn’t have been more than ten years old.
His faded blue T-shirt hung loosely from his thin shoulders. His sneakers looked old but carefully tied, and a worn backpack was hanging from his back. One hand was gripping the doorframe so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
He looked terrified.
I slowly lowered my coffee.
“What did you just say?” I asked.
The boy swallowed.
“Please don’t drink it.”
Then he looked directly at the cup in my hand.
“I saw someone put something in your coffee.”
My entire office seemed to go silent.
My assistant stared at me.
The security officer near the door reached for his radio.
And I couldn’t stop looking at the little boy.
“Who did you see?” I asked.
He pointed toward my coffee.
“The man who delivered it.”
Then he told me something that made the room feel ten degrees colder.
The man had looked around first, making sure nobody was watching.
Then he had taken out a small bottle…
…and poured something into my coffee.
I placed the cup on my desk without taking another sip.
At that moment, I had no idea that this frightened child had just saved my life.
And I had absolutely no idea that the worn backpack on his shoulders contained a secret that would change everything I thought I knew about my company—and about a woman whose death I had been mourning for three weeks.
“What’s your name?” I asked him.
“Ethan,” he whispered.
Then I asked the question that would lead us into something far more dangerous than a poisoned cup of coffee.
“How did you get into this building, Ethan?”
