P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

I stared at the red circle around Michael’s face.

Someone came looking.

Daniel.

“What things?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just said he told you.”

“He told me enough to be afraid.”

“Of what?”

“I don’t know!”

For the first time, Emily sounded angry.

Or frightened.

Maybe both.

“He made me promise that if anyone named Cole ever contacted you, I would call a number he gave me.”

“What number?”

“I have it.”

“Then call it.”

“I already did.”

My pulse jumped.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

I glanced toward the hotel door.

“Who answered?”

“No one.”

“Emily, this is insane.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t know. I woke up after spending the night with a man who apparently knows secrets about my dead husband, and you’re telling me you’ve been hiding those secrets from me for six years.”

Her voice softened.

“I’m sorry.”

I laughed once, bitterly.

“Are you?”
