“Insurance is a marvelous instrument.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You changed it.”
“Yes.”
“You put Emily’s name on it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“If Margaret suffered an unfortunate d/e/@/th, attention would naturally fall on the daughter who benefited.”
Emily went pale.
“You were framing me.”
“Preparing possibilities.”
Michael moved toward him.
Thomas stopped him.
Mercer looked delighted.
“Still emotional after all these years.”
“You photographed my wife.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened my children.”
“I threatened many people.”
Rebecca whispered, “Enough.”
Mercer glanced at her.
“You object now?”
“I objected years ago.”
“And still returned.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Because I needed evidence.”
Thomas’s head lifted.
“What?”
Rebecca reached into her handbag.
One of Mercer’s men moved.
She froze.
Slowly, she removed a small recorder.
“I’ve been collecting conversations for three years.”
Mercer’s face changed.
“You stupid woman.”
That was the first time he seemed genuinely frightened.
Rebecca looked at Thomas.
