P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

“To whom?”

“Enough people.”

Mercer looked at Rebecca.

“You promised the records were destroyed.”

Rebecca whispered, “I thought they were.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You worked for him.”

Rebecca began crying.

“No.”

Mercer laughed.

“She never worked for me.”

Rebecca shut her eyes.

“She worked with me.”

Daniel looked physically ill.

Mercer continued.

“Rebecca and I built the financial side together.”

Michael whispered, “Rebecca?”

She covered her mouth.

“I was twenty-four.”

“You were helping the attorney investigating us.”

“Yes.”

“You helped me escape.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I loved you.”

The warehouse went completely still.

Mercer’s expression hardened.

Rebecca continued.

“I met Charles first. I believed him when he told me the money wasn’t hurting anyone.”

Mercer scoffed.

Rebecca ignored him.

“Then I met you, Michael.”

Her voice trembled.

“You were decent. You were terrified. I realized what Charles had become.”

“So you saved me.”

“At first.”
