P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

Holloway should have stayed buried.

Michael whispered, “Mercer knows.”

“Yes.”

Thomas pointed at me.

“He knows about Margaret too.”

Emily handed me a photocopy of the insurance amendment.

The policy had been raised to two million dollars.

The primary beneficiary after Michael’s presumed d/e/@/th was not Ryan and Emily equally.

It was Emily alone.

My stomach twisted.

I looked at my daughter.

“You changed this?”

“No.”

“Your authorization code is here.”

“I know.”

“Then—”

“It was stolen.”

Thomas continued.

“Someone wanted investigators to believe Emily had a financial motive if something happened to you.”

My daughter whispered, “That is why I went looking for Thomas.”

I stared at the paper.

Suddenly, every person in my family appeared trapped inside someone else’s design.

Daniel examined the policy.

“There’s a company number.”

Thomas nodded.

“It belongs to a firm Mercer once controlled.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?”

“I’ve seen that number.”
