“That explains more than you know.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Mom, Thomas isn’t the person you need to fear.”
My skin went cold.
“Then who?”
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Ask Dad who signed your life-insurance amendment four months before he d/i/ed.”
I turned toward Michael.
His face had gone white.
The call disconnected.
I stared at him.
“What insurance amendment?”
And for the first time since seeing my husband alive, I wondered whether finding him was not a miracle at all.
Maybe it was the beginning of the truth I had never been meant to learn.
PART 4 — THE POLICY THAT MADE MY DAUGHTER LOOK GUILTY
“There was a policy,” Michael admitted.
“On me?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
He hesitated.
“Originally five hundred thousand dollars.”
“Originally?”
His silence answered me.
“How much now?”
“According to what Ryan apparently found… two million.”
I laughed.
Then stopped when neither man did.
