P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

“Mrs. Bennett, your daughter’s car was found abandoned two blocks from your home at approximately five thirty this morning.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

“There was blood on the driver’s seat.”

My hand flew to my mouth.

“No.”

“And there’s something else.”

The officer removed a clear evidence bag.

Inside was an old photograph.

Another copy of the same family portrait Daniel had left beside my bed.

Except this time the red circle wasn’t around Michael.

It was around me.

Written across the back were five words.

SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH NOW.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Then Rebecca whispered something so softly I nearly missed it.

“Oh God.”

I turned to her.

“What?”

Her eyes were fixed on the photograph.

“I’ve seen that handwriting before.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Mom?”

Rebecca looked at me.

All the color had drained from her face.

“That isn’t from the people who hunted Michael.”
