“But he looks like him?”
“Yes.”
“And your father secretly sent money to Daniel’s mother for years?”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel knew exactly who I was?”
“I think so.”
I shut my eyes.
There were too many pieces.
None of them fit.
Then came the knock.
Three slow knocks at the hotel door.
I froze.
“Mom?”
Another knock.
“Someone’s here.”
“Don’t answer it.”
“Why?”
“Mom, please. Do not open that door.”
My heart hammered.
I moved toward it anyway.
“Who is it?” I called.
A man’s voice answered.
“Margaret?”
Daniel.
My hand flew to my mouth.
Emily heard him through the phone.
“Oh God.”
“What?”
“Mom, lock the door.”
“It’s already locked.”
“Call hotel security.”
I looked through the peephole.
Daniel stood in the hallway wearing the same dark blazer from the night before.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him was an older woman, perhaps close to my age, with silver-blond hair and a cream coat.
