THE DECISION
For one second, I froze.
The ball wasn’t coming to me.
It was flying toward Marcus.
Our wide receiver.
He was running across the back of the end zone, completely uncovered.
But there was one problem.
A defender had finally realized what was happening.
He was closing in fast.
I could see it before Marcus did.
“MAR-CUS!”
I screamed as loud as I could.
He turned.
The ball was already dropping.
The defender jumped.
Marcus jumped too.
And I did the only thing I could think of.
I ran.
I had no idea whether I could get there in time.
My legs were burning.
My lungs felt like they were on fire.
But I kept going.
Marcus got both hands on the ball.
The defender hit him.
The ball popped loose.
It went straight up into the air.
The entire stadium gasped.
And somehow…
I was underneath it.
I reached up.
My fingertips touched the ball.
It bounced once.
I caught it against my chest.
Then I hit the ground.
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.
No crowd.
No coaches.
No teammates.
Nothing.
I just stared at the ball in my hands.
Then I heard someone yell.
“DID HE CATCH THAT?”
I looked toward the official.
He was running toward us.
My heart stopped.
He raised both arms.
TOUCHDOWN.
The stadium exploded.
I jumped up.
Marcus tackled me before I could even stand properly.
Then three more teammates jumped on top of us.
I was laughing.
I was yelling.
I didn’t even know what I was saying.
Someone grabbed my helmet.
Someone else screamed in my ear.
And somewhere through all that noise, I heard Coach Reynolds.
“THAT’S YOUR JOB!”
I looked toward the sideline.
He was pointing at me.
And he was smiling.
I had never seen that smile before.
The final score flashed across the giant screen.
We had won.
But the strangest part wasn’t the touchdown.
It wasn’t the crowd.
It wasn’t even the fact that the same people who had doubted me were suddenly chanting my name.
It was what happened when I walked back into the locker room.
Everyone was celebrating.
Music was blasting.
Players were dancing.
Water was flying everywhere.
Then I noticed something sitting on my locker.
A small envelope.
My name was written across the front.
I looked around.
“Who left this?”
Nobody answered.
I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Just one sentence.
I read it once.
Then again.
And suddenly, the smile disappeared from my face.
Because whoever had written it knew something about me that nobody on that team was supposed to know.
And at the bottom of the page were five words that made my stomach drop.
“You were never supposed to play.”
Nobody noticed the second key.
I did.
And suddenly, that strange sentence made sense.
To be continued…
