“Evelyn knows the name of the person behind it.”
I looked at her.
“Who?”
She closed her eyes.
“I was afraid to tell you.”
“Tell me.”
“The person who ordered your father’s death was…”
A loud crash interrupted her.
The storage-room door shook.
Someone was trying to break it open.
Dr. Reed stepped backward.
“How did they find us?”
Then the door burst open.
Mack stood there.
But she wasn’t alone.
Behind her were two guards.
Mack looked at me.
“Give me the evidence.”
I held the box tighter.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
She looked at Evelyn.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You’ve been saying that for eleven years.”
Mack froze.
Eleven years.
I looked at her.
“You knew my father.”
Mack said nothing.
“You were there.”
Still nothing.
“You were there the night he died.”
Mack’s expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
Then Dr. Reed pulled out a phone.
“I’ve already sent copies.”
Mack stared at him.
“To whom?”
“The state investigators.”
She stepped backward.
“And the federal prosecutor.”
Mack’s face collapsed.
The guards behind her exchanged frightened looks.
Then one of them removed his badge.
