Khalid moved through the room as though nothing had happened.
He shook hands, embraced old friends, and introduced me to people who praised his generosity.
“This is my wife, Amal,” he said. “She is the heart of our home.”
I looked at him.
He smiled.
I wondered how many people could stand beside someone who had hurt them and still be expected to make the world believe they were loved.
Halfway through the evening, Khalid took the stage.
He spoke about family, responsibility, and the importance of protecting those who depended on us. He described the foundation’s work supporting families in difficult circumstances.
The audience applauded.
I sat still.
Then his father rose from his seat.
He walked toward the stage carrying a small, dark leather folder.
Khalid stopped speaking.
“Father?” he said, smiling uncertainly.
His father did not smile back.
“There is something this family needs to hear,” he said.
