I memorized an emergency number. I arranged a discreet way to contact Huda. I made copies of my identification documents and Lina’s papers, keeping them where I could reach them if I needed to leave quickly.
I also began writing down what happened after each incident, including dates and details, and storing the notes somewhere Khalid could not easily access.
I was careful. I knew that discovering my preparations could increase the danger.
Then, one evening, Khalid came home early.
I was in the kitchen when I heard his car enter the driveway. A few moments later, his footsteps crossed the hallway.
“Amal?”
I stepped out of the kitchen.
He held my phone in one hand.
My heart dropped.
“Who is Huda?”
I forced myself to breathe.
“She lives nearby.”
“I know where she lives.” He lifted the phone. “Why have you been calling her?”
I had no safe answer.
