ON MY WEDDING NIGHT I HID UNDER THE BED TO SURPRISE MY husb

Because that’s the thing about a recording. Lorna could have called me a liar. Grayson could have said I misunderstood. But you cannot argue with your own voice, laughing, describing a plan to defraud your new wife out of an apartment, while calling her father a nobody. There is no reframe for that. There is only the sound of it, playing in a quiet room, while everyone you’ve ever tried to impress listens.

The recording kept going. “She’s so easy to manage. That shabby little flat she took me to was pathetic.” “Her father’s a nobody. She’ll be grateful for whatever we let her keep.” “No weakness from the start. Let her know who makes the decisions.”

By the time it finished, Lorna’s carefully built world was in pieces on the brunch table. And I picked up my phone, turned it off, and said, calmly, into the silence:

“Now. Let’s be clear from the start, like you wanted. You picked the wrong girl to rob. And you should have asked what my father actually does before you decided he was a nobody.”
