“What about the children?”
Elena picked up a handbag.
“You’ll manage.”
I genuinely thought she was joking.
“You cannot be serious.”
“David, look at our life. Look at this house. Look at the bills on that table. Is this what you think I deserve?”
“This is what we built together.”
“No. This is what you settled for.”
I stepped closer.
“We can fix whatever is wrong. If you want to work less, we can work out a budget. If you want a holiday, we’ll save for one. Just tell me what you need.”
She stared at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Pity.
“You still don’t understand.”
Then she said the words I would remember for the rest of my life.
“You CAN’T give me the life I want. But Julian can. He bought me a brand-new car and even took me to the Maldives. Do you understand the kind of life he gives me? The kind of life I deserve?”
