“Then why did you tell me not to see my children?”
Julian looked at the box.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
He glanced toward the guests.
“Of losing you.”
The answer was almost laughable.
He had been afraid of losing a woman who had left her husband and six daughters for him.
He had been afraid that if she returned to her family, she might discover that the life he offered was not enough to replace what she had abandoned.
“I knew that if you spent time with the girls, you might begin to question your decision,” he continued. “I knew they would need you. I knew David was doing everything he could to raise them. And I was afraid you would eventually realize what you had done.”
Elena stared at him.
“So you made me believe he was stopping me.”
“I told myself it was better for everyone if we moved forward.”
