“Elena.”
“You look well.”
“So do you.”
She leaned closer.
“I hope we can keep things pleasant today. It’s a wedding, after all.”
“I have no intention of causing a scene.”
“Good.”
Her eyes traveled across the room.
“Julian and I have a wonderful life now. I’m sure you understand that people move on.”
I looked at the man standing beside her.
“Some people do.”
Julian extended his hand.
“David. It’s been a long time.”
I shook it.

“Not when you’re raising six children.”
His smile disappeared for half a second.

“Anyway, Chloe has something she’d like to show me.”
She turned toward our daughter.
“Don’t you, sweetheart?”
Chloe nodded.
“Yes, Mom. I do.”
She looked at the event coordinator, who gave a small signal.
Two members of the venue staff wheeled a large rectangular box into the center of the reception hall.
