For a few seconds, I couldn’t even breathe.
I looked at Daniel.
Then I looked through the window at the black SUV.
“What do you mean, he was supposed to be dead?”
Daniel pushed himself upright, fighting through the pain.
“Because that’s what they told everyone.”
My wife grabbed my arm.
“Listen to me. We don’t have much time.”
I wanted answers, but the fear in her eyes stopped me.
Daniel told me the man in the SUV was connected to the same group he had crossed years earlier. The world had believed this man was dead after a supposed accident.
He wasn’t.
He had disappeared.
And now he was back.
My wife had spent months secretly helping Daniel stay alive because she believed telling me would put me directly in danger.
Suddenly, I understood the Thursday nights.
They hadn’t been dates.
They hadn’t been secret meetings with another man.
My wife had been bringing Daniel food, medicine, and everything he needed to survive.
She had been protecting my brother while carrying the entire secret alone.
But there was one thing I still couldn’t understand.
“Why didn’t you trust me?”
My wife looked at me through tears.
“Because I knew what you’d do.”
“What?”
“You’d come looking for him.”
She was right.
I would have.
And that’s exactly what frightened her.
Then Daniel suddenly pointed toward the window.
“Look.”
The black SUV was gone.
My wife rushed to the window.
“He left?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
His face turned pale.
“He wouldn’t leave.”
I felt a chill run through me.
Then we heard something downstairs.
A door closing.
My wife grabbed my hand.
Daniel whispered:
“Someone’s inside the house.”
I looked toward the hallway.
We were on the second floor.
There was nowhere safe to run.
Then footsteps began climbing the stairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
One step at a time.
My wife squeezed my hand.
I looked at Daniel.
And for the first time in years, my brother looked exactly like the frightened kid I remembered from our childhood.
The footsteps stopped outside the room.
Nobody spoke.
Then the door handle began to turn.
I moved in front of my wife and brother.
The door opened.
And the man standing there wasn’t the stranger from the SUV.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside me at family dinners for years.
And in that moment, I finally understood the truth about my wife’s Thursday nights.
She hadn’t been hiding another man from me.
She had been hiding my brother from the person who wanted him dead.
And somehow, the person who had helped her keep that secret was the last person I ever expected.
