My Stepsister Took My Scholarship Essay – She Thought the Scholarship Was Hers Until a Committee Member Asked One Question That Made Her Go Pale

I actually pressed my hand over my mouth!

Brittany walked out, and despite me being right there by the door, she didn’t look at me. The cream blazer suddenly looked borrowed, too.

The committee called me 20 minutes later. I told them about Sunday pancakes, about Dad squeezing my hand before the exam, about the note I’d read every morning for months, and about how my final typed draft disappeared from the laptop I shared with Brittany.

And guess what?! I got the scholarship!

She didn’t look at me.

Months later, I sat in a plastic folding chair at graduation with Dad’s note tucked inside my cap.

Natalie didn’t come. Nor did Brittany.

Miss Garcia stood in their place.

She squeezed my shoulder when they called my name, and I walked across that stage, feeling Dad walk with me.

Much later, I unfolded the note once more on the college grounds before class.

“I’m still showing up, Dad,” I whispered. “Even when nobody’s watching.”

Especially then.

I felt a breeze, and in it, the smell of pancakes.
