My Stepsister Took My Scholarship Essay – She Thought the Scholarship Was Hers Until a Committee Member Asked One Question That Made Her Go Pale

I’d just saved my future or handed it to a stranger to bury.

Miss Garcia had insisted I be there, just in case. So I sat in the hallway outside the committee room door, my hands folded, waiting for a turn nobody had promised me.

Through the cracked door, I heard a man’s warm voice. Miss Garcia later told me the committee member had the essay lifted in his hand.

“This was one of the most moving pieces we received.”

Miss Garcia had insisted I be there.

“Thank you,” Brittany said.

Don’t miss

“Just one question, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course.” My teacher told me that my stepsister had smiled.

“Tell us what your father meant by, ‘Keep showing up for your life, even when I’m not there to see it.'”

Silence.

I could hear my heart beating.

Long before Miss Garcia confirmed it, I’d figured the committee member asking was Mr. Harlan.

“Tell us what your father meant.”

***

You see, on that day when I emailed him, I’d attached a copy of my handwritten draft.

Then I wrote the hardest short note of my life.

“Dear Mr. Harlan. My name is Halle. The essay submitted under Brittany, my stepsister’s name, is mine. I’m not asking you to punish anyone. I’m only asking one thing.”
