I smiled.
“I can still make my own tea and get dressed by myself.”
Laura laughed, but I didn’t like the sound of that laugh.
“That’s not the only issue, George. The house is too big. The taxes are high. It needs repairs.”
I said nothing.
The following week, they came back.
This time, they brought paperwork.
Daniel opened a folder and placed it on the table.
“Dad, it’s just a formality. Let’s temporarily put the house in my name, and I’ll take care of everything.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Your mother wouldn’t want me signing anything I don’t fully understand.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Laura immediately said,
“We’ve been helping you for three years. Don’t you trust us?”
They left offended that evening.
But one month later, everything changed.
Daniel came early in the morning.
Laura followed him inside and, without even looking at me, started pulling my clothes out of the closet.
“What are you doing?”
Daniel wouldn’t even look me in the eyes.
“Dad, you’re going to stay with Aunt Claire for a few weeks.”
“Why?”
“We’ve decided to renovate the house.”
