My son and daughter-in-law laughed when I walked into the courtroom. “Ha-ha, now we’re going to leave her with nothing

At twenty-three, calling me from the hospital when Vanessa gave birth to their daughter.

There is something terrible about watching someone you love become the person you once warned them not to become.

But love does not require blindness.

Richard taught me that.

“Never confuse forgiveness with surrender,” he used to say.

I finally understood why.

When the hearing resumed, Judge Mercer asked whether I had additional evidence.

“Yes.”

I removed a sealed envelope from the lining of my coat.

Hale stared at it.

I had watched thousands of witnesses over my career.

The guilty ones always looked at the object before hearing what it contained.

Judge Mercer opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of twelve invoices.

Each came from Silver Pines.

Each described “family assessment consulting.”

Each had been paid by Vanessa.

With money transferred from Daniel and Vanessa’s joint home-equity line.

Total amount:

$38,400.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You spent thirty-eight thousand dollars?”

She whispered, “It was an investment.”

The entire courtroom heard her.

Daniel stared.

“What investment?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I answered for her.

“My house.”

Judge Mercer looked sharply toward me.

I continued.

“Based on comparable sales, my home is worth approximately $1.7 million.”
